Peter and the Star Catchers/Peter Pan

Read either or both of these books for the month of January.  Peter Pan is of course a well known classic, while Peter and the Star Catchers is a prequel written after Peter Pan by the son of Barrie.  This should be an enjoyable read to kick off the new year.  Have fun and share your thoughts!!  We have had only limited discussion so far on this site.  Jenny and Shelly get gold stars but everyone else gets gray spots. ;-)

I read Peter Pan two years ago and remember enjoying Hook's obsession with "good form." If I remember correctly, he didn't mind being bested by Peter nearly as much as he hated that Peter showed good form and Hook didn't. Be sure and comment on that and help me remember what happens.

I am enjoying this book. It is very unique and different than I thought it would be. I found it interesting that Peter is so overly confident and sly. He entices Wendy to come to Neverland through various appealing suggestions, but the icing on the cake appears to be that she could tuck the lost boys in at night and darn their clothing.
I'm not really a feminist in nature according to some definitions, but the following quotes amused me.

-there are only lost boys because "girls you know are much too clever to fall out of their prams"
-" One girl is more than 20 boys"
- and then Wendy's reaction when Peter attempted to attach his shadow with soap "how exactly like a boy"

Other things I find interesting is Peter's confidence seems to wain a bit while interacting with Wendy because she finds it odd, tragic, or interesting that he has his address, no mother, and doesn't know what a kiss is.

I have read peter pan several times, and mostly loved the way the author talks, its old fashion, but very charming. I this time am reading the star chasers and am enjoying it. I am grossed out by what hungry john is it just tried to feed the boys on the ship. A stew with worms and a rat. So gross ! I hope someone else reads the star catchers with me, but for all of you reading the original it is a lovely book. love jenny

I am going to start reading Starcatchers this week. I am excited. How is everyone else's reading going?

I finished Peter and the Star catchers and enjoyed it. This book is definatly a boys book. Its 90 percent pirates and fights. Very little of the girlish fantasy, pixies ect. Most of what we know of Neverland and its magic falls into place in the last chapters. I remember the mermaids not being the disney version in Peter pan the book, however in this book they come off at times like something from a sci fi horror film. Like I said a boys book. It was fun to read though. It left me wondering more about the "star stuff" How do the scar catchers return it? Who do they give it too? Tell me more about this parallel universe... Molly starts to explain what she knows and I read the rest of the book assuming the rest would be filled in by her father later but you never hear another word. Yeah I guess it was not the point of the book, but then why elude to more info and never deliver. Wow I just read my note and I sound bitter, I really did like the book. Love to all.

I finished Peter and the Star-catchers and I really liked it. It was a fun read. I enjoyed reading about the origins of so many elements in the Peter Pan story.

Star-stuff makes me think of Happy Fun Ball :)

I always thought Never Land was actually not on Earth and this book leaves it there where they found it. Does it get moved in another book? Or am I mistaken and Never Land is and always has been on Earth?

Anyway, a fun book that tells you how Peter began. Except for his last name. Where does he get the name Pan? Looks like I am going to have to read the next prequel.

This might be repetative, Blogger's giving me a hard time.

I think it is Happy Fun Ball! They're both so shiny!

Neverland wasn't really ever determined where it was. All of the "second star" stuff Peter made up because he doesn't really know the address of Neverland and his made up address always changes. I always thought it wasn't on earth but I think it might be possible that they just fly here and there and up and down and end up in the middle of the Atlantic.

Then again I was disappointed that Star Catchers didn't follow James Barrie's Peter Pan more closly.

But by far my favorite part of Star Catchers was the Bra Sail. So worth reading the book for the description of that contraption and then to turn the page and see it illustrated, I laughed aloud!

I agree with Jenny that Star Catchers is a bit of a boy book.

I'm gonna throw out for discussion my favorite quote from Peter Pan (I read them both.) It describes the Darling children:

"Off we skip like the most heartless things in the world, which is what children are, but so attractive; and we have an entirely selfish time; and then when we have need of special attention we nobly return for it, confident that we shall be embraced instead of smacked." (chp.11)

Does anybody else see the truth in this funny statement? As it applies ro children or as it applies to us and our Father?

That is an awesome quote. That hits the nail on the head. I am impressed that you made the link to our relationship with God. I have to agree.

I also enjoyed the part about "the ladies." That's good stuff.

I'm sure nobody is reading this comment but just for the record, James Barrie wrote Peter Pan, and Dave Barry co-wrote Starcatchers. It's just ironic that they both have the name Barrie/Barry...I don't think that there is any relation.
