The Peacegiver

Our book for February is The Peacegiver: How Christ Offers to Heal Our Hearts and Homes. This is a profound and insightful book in story form. It teaches us to look deep within ourselves, to repent and change, drawing closer to our Savior Jesus Christ. In a world where blaming, rationalizing, and justifying are the norm; this book brings insight, understanding and truth. May this book renew your conviction to draw closer to the Savior and accept his atoning sacrifice in your life is my prayer. I hope you find it to be as influential and moving as I have found it to be.

For a great background of the author as will as articles exploring the meaning and writing of The Peacegiver see www.deseretbook.com/authors under James L. Ferrell.

Hey so I actually read this one. Actually I listened to it on my ipod, but I had read it before. One thing that really stood out to me this time is when Rick's grandpa is explaining the story of Abigail. He says, "If the story reveals something about peacemaking, as you say it does, but you yourself have not been brought closer to peace because of it, then either it is a trifling story or you have not yet penetrated it... Don't be so quick to understand" (pg. 46) We hear and read a lot of stories in our lives (the most important ones are contained in the lives of the prophets both living and deceased), and if we truly do not change because of them, then it is be cause we are being too "quick to understand."

I know I always post late, but I am doing my best to keep up with the book club. I have read this book before and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't married so I didn't feel like it applied to me all that well since the main problems in the story involve marriage. As I am reading it this time, I am realizing that it applies so much more to my other relationships than to my marriage (I married Michelle, enough said). I never thought of myself as a grudge-holder, but holy cow!! I have been discovering that the lessons of this book really apply to me in all areas of my life.

Right now I am trying to internalize the idea that because Christ took upon himself the sins of my "enemies" I don't need to blame them anymore. I love that! But it is taking some effort to implement. Still, it feels really good already.

I just finished! Each of the four Parts of this book has been impactful to me. I was wowed by the section on Ninevah and getting what we deserve. I have used the "deserve" argument so many times both in my supposed defense and in offense against others. It was an enlightening section.

Also quite interesting was the next section which discussed how a single sin can have a profound influence over us. I feel like I better understand how our sins become chains.

Great book for the club - and for life!

Yeah, so the word "impactful" is not a word. But it sounded so good in my head...

Robert young said: I loved the book and, in fact after I got into it a bit, remembered that I had read it sometime in the past. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it as much or more this time. A great way to help us all keep important things in perspective. Thanks for the suggestion. It came at a good time for me personally and was a great blessing. Tears flowed. Rob

I am sorry, I tried twice to share comments but both times they did not post. So this is a little late, and not as brillent as my original, now lost comments. I really like the imagery of the cords that bind us and slowly lead us down to hell. I found that passage to be very insightful, the way most people were even unaware they were bound at all, and how easily and quitely they were snared. How often do we all make a decision to improve something in our life and without it seems even knowing it we slip back into old bad habits. AWAKE ! Snap out of it. Thankyou for this book, it was an enjoyable quick read but full of various ways to recognize our faults and different angle of looking at something incuding ourselfs is often what we all need to AWAKE and improve them. jenny
